The Carousel Center is set to host the upcoming Everyday Heroes Luncheon to unite local partners in safeguarding vulnerable youth and helping abused children heal.
The event will bring together community organizations to strengthen local support services.
🎭 Culture
The Town of Leland announced four dates for its Live in Leland series at Founders Park.
Michael Schott performs Sept. 17 at 6 p.m., Dirty Dancing shows Sept. 19 at 7:40 p.m., British Invaders appear Oct. 1 at 6 p.m., and Muppets in Space is scheduled Oct. 17 with stargazing.
The North Carolina Arts Council announced nearly $11 million in grants for the 2026 — 27 fiscal year, with Cape Fear groups like Brunswick County Arts Council and NC Rice Festival among the recipients.
The awards, ranging from $2,000 to over $350,000, will fund outreach, professional development and local art programs statewide.
Fuzz and Mac dropped their new album Heide Drive on Sept.
8 and will perform at Reggie's 42nd Street Tavern on Saturday, Sept. 12 — doors open at 7:30 p.m. and cover is $10. The album mixes hip-hop and R&B and highlights local music roots.
The Cape Fear Native Plant Festival hosts a garden tour showcasing eight private gardens with native plants across New Hanover County (including Barbara Sullivan’s secret garden in downtown Wilmington) and follows the native plant shopping day on Saturday, Sept.
19 with limited tickets available.
🌲 Environment
On Sept. 10, state officials announced a nearly $600 million settlement with Chemours and DuPont over PFAS contamination from a Fayetteville Works plant upstream.
Local governments will use the funds to improve clean drinking water systems for affected communities.
Conservationists will sue the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for not protecting the rare Venus flytrap; they claim development and climate change are shrinking the plant's coastal habitat (mainly near Wilmington) and leaving only a few wild populations.

During the first week of the 2026 season, the Hoggard girls flag football team recorded a shutout win against New Hanover in their first sanctioned game, marking a strong start for the local team.
